it designates the direct object of a verb, indicating the RECEIVER of the action

ex: Pueri cibum amant: the boys love their food. “cibum”: direct object

A

Dative: to/for (someone benefits/receives something)
- give TO, tell TO, help FOR.
i.e. indirect object

Ablative: by/with/from/ in/ at
- something is done by MEANS OF or in CIRCUMSTANCES of something

ERGO:
dative: relational (who something is “to” OR “for”)
ablative: contextual (how, by what, from where, OR when)
