gated communities

A

Found in urban and rural communities. They may have CCTV coverage, security guards and security gate access, often accessed with a residents PIN number. Designed to deter access by unknown visitors and to reduce crime. An example is The Park area of central Nottingham. Close to the city centre with expensive Victorian housing. Residents pay a local “park tax” to maintain and enhance this exclusive area.

Q

coastal retirement communities

A

e.g.: St.Ives in Cornwall. Contain large numbers of affluent retirees, many who have moved from London and Bristol. Drives up local house prices making them unaffordable for locals. 20% of homes in St.Ives are second homes, owned by wealthy city dwellers. This also increases house prices and has a negative impact on local businesses, as homes remain empty for much of the year.
