8
Q

List the stages of anesthesia.

A
  • Stage I: voluntary movement / HR & RR increase
  • Stage II: excitement stage, loss of voluntary control, irregular respiratory pattern, and reflexes present
  • Stage III (Plane 2): unconscious, HR & RR decrease, pupillary light reflex (PLR) is lost
  • Stage IV: all systems severely depressed, all reflexes are absent, death

16
Q

What does the Oxygen flush valve do?

A

Bypasses the vaporizer and delivers pure oxygen to patients

17
Q

What is the purpose of a Vaporizer in anesthesia?

A

Designed and color coded for each specific agent

18
Q

What color is Sevoflurane vaporizer?

19
Q

What color is Isoflurane vaporizer?

20
Q

What is a Rebreathing Circuit used for?

A

Circulating fresh gases to patients and removes waste gases

21
Q

What are three advantages of a rebreathing circuit?

A
  • Conserves body heat and moisture
  • Allows for observation of patient breathing
  • Provides manual ventilation
22
Q

What is a downside of a rebreathing circuit?

A

Restricts air movement and can transfer infectious agents

23
Q

What is a Non Rebreathing Circuit?

A

One Way System that is best for small patients (<7kg)

24
Q

What is the purpose of the Reservoir Bag in anesthesia?

A

Deflates during inspiration and inflates during expiration; used for manual ventilation

25
What does the Pop Off Valve do?
Prevents pressure buildup within the circuit and transfers waste gases to scavenging system
26
How often must the CO2 Absorbent Canister be changed?
Every 6-8 hours
27
What is the function of the Scavenging System?
Transfers waste gases outside the building
28
What is included in the Pre-Anesthetic Period?
* History * PE * ASA status * Bloodwork * IV Catheter * Premeds * Quiet observation
29
What is the ASA I classification?
Normal, healthy
30
What does ASA IV classification indicate?
Severe systemic disease and incapacitated
31
What is an indicator of oxygenation?
Mucous membranes color and CRT
32
What is the best indicator of adequate respirations?
Capnograph
33
How often should body temperature be checked during surgery?
Every 15 minutes during surgery and every 30 minutes post surgery
34
What reflexes are absent during the surgical plane of anesthesia?
Palpebral, swallowing, and pedal reflexes
35
What indicates a light plane of anesthesia?
Nystagmus
36
What are the classifications of anesthetic problems/emergencies?
* Advanced Drug Reactions * Equipment Malfunctions * Anesthetic Overdose * Surgical Complications * Human Error
37
What should be checked if there is an issue with oxygen flow?
* ET tube * Pop Off Valve (Open) * Oxygen Supply * Scavenger System (On)
38
What is the first step if vomiting or regurgitation occurs during anesthesia?
Place head below body
