What is Augustine’s view on sex

A
  • way original sin is passed from generation to generation

Humans can only be saved (achieve salvation) through gods grace (gods love to people and only way humanity can be restored to harmonious living) as no one deserves salvation due to original sin and sinful nature

Q

Rejected salvation by grace as too pessimistic + damns humanity to a life of sin with little hope of redemption

23
Q

Strengths of Augustine’s view on human nature

A
  • original sin can be observed in greedy and violent interactions typical of unrestrained human societies
  • Augustine draws upon genesis 3 (Old Testament) and New Testament writings of Paul to present a strong biblical case for original sin
  • presents a realistic model of how humans possess natural inclinations toward sinning
24
Q

4 critics of Augustine

A
  1. Dawkins
  2. Jean Paul Satre
  3. Sigmund Freud
  4. Pelagius
25
How is Dawkins a critic of Augustine
Disproves theory of a + e so aug theory can’t work: - impossible for us all to have come from 2 people as gene pool too diverse (genetic diversity) - lowest ever population = 10000 not 2 - believes inherited sin is ridiculous, if god was omnibenevolent happen as is cruel - view on sex is unhealthy as causes an association with sin and shame
26
How is Jean Paul satre a critic of Augustine
Rejects concept of inherited sin : - believes no such thing as human nature as we all make our own choices - aren’t corrupted from birth ( we don’t share nature with our ancestors) - “existence precedes esssence” - rejects idea have predetermined purpose
27
How is Freud a critic of Augustine
Criticises view on sex: - believes shouldn’t have negative view of sex, is important and shouldn’t be repressed - believes a corrupt or evil human nature is the product of soceity and upbringing and not some ancient sin
28
How is Pelagius a critic of Augustine
Rejected idea of inclination to sin and inheriting of sin : - god is omnibenevolent so wouldn’t allow - if god was omniscient would’ve known a and e would fall so wouldn’t have done what he did - life is meaningless if salvation by grace is true - gives church power
