Q

what are the 2 analogies db used to describe true discipleship and what do they mean

A

disciples must be like “salt” and “light” in communities (comes from matthew 5)

salt - must act like preservatives to the world, preserving it from evil and preventing it from being corrupted by sin + enhance soceity by influencing world for good

light - illuminate darkness (stand for truth and what is right) + shine light on injustices

16
Q

why did db advocate for a religionless christ

A

reliogion is corrupt and more bothered about rituals and rules rather than faith which allows to be true disciple and is most important

17
Q

what deos “no rusty swords” mean

A

sword = faith, as is powerful, good, protect others
rust - relig is outdated and letting christisnity decay

18
Q

what was the confessing church and its aim

A

church founded by niemolller, db, barth to stand against hitlers infiltration of christian churches

19
Q

what was finkenwalde and its purppose

A

secret illlegal seminary that allowed preists to be trained free from hitlers idealogy

20
Q

quote from db to do with confessing church

A

“the church is her true self only when she exists for humanity” (relig about others not power)

21
Q

what type of christian was db critical of

A

calls themself a christ and expecst g will grant them salv out of omnib but does nothing to commit to g

22
Q

what is cheap grace

A

belief that g will save everyone so can carry on what doing - “deadly enemy of our church” as just people going throuh the motions

23
Q

what is costly grace

A

beleif that grace has to be truly earnt - have to sacrifice everything to g and commit lives to him

24
Q

why did db believe true discipleship should be uncomfortable and involve suffering

A

as involves committing self to suffer alongside those who are oppressed in solidarity rather than watching

25
what is db quote on suff and solidarity and its menaing
"adopting the cross"- discopleship means doing this and accepting that suffering and sacrifice are an inherent aspect of living for others and g
26
why did db see sacrifice and suff as crucial to life of a true disciple
follows path of j, suffered to save, so should do the same
27
quote from db about being a christian shouldnt be seen as the norm
"if christian life looks no different from ordinary life ... then it is not truly christian"
28
what does solidarity mean
"existence for others"
29
args for db puts too much emphasis on suffering
- db own experience of suff isnt representative of all christian experience - he experienced direct and sustained suff, most christs do not and so his message is context dependant - db seems to downplay the joy and hope offered by christianity - j death isnt and resurrection isnt just about suffering it represents triumph over death and sin, should instead focus on living a good life and follow gods comms - by focussing to much on suff puts bar too high making christianity unappealing
30
args to suggest db is right tol emphasise suffering
- everyone experiences suff in some form in some points in their life and is a huge amount of suff in the worlds that needs to be adressed and responded to by christs so should be seeking ways to alleviate suff - j life was one of suffering e.g death, fasting in des for 40 days, shunned by soc therefore our lives should reflect - through suff salvation can be achieved as allows us to earn it and dev and grow - db also focusses on solidarity as well as suff which acts as a form of consolation (j lived life of solidarity)
31
args to support christs practicing civil disobedience
- follow e.g of j - broke cultural laws (associated with outcasts, going against pharisees "i did not come to bring peace, but a sword" - db - no rusty swords - christs must remeber the true purpose and principles and not be afraid to challenge state when nec
32
args against christs practicing civil disobedience
- laws must be respected as otherwise lead to terrorism/extremism. laws on whole are there to protect us and ensure soc is fair and just - shpuldnt be allowed to break them as and when you feel like it - "let everyone be subject to the governing authorities" (bible support) and j never actually broke law, he encouraged to follow law - did challenge customs and tradits but not laws
33
args to support the idea that db thelogy is relevant today
- db idea of no rusty swords is relevant as suggess church needs to strip outadated practices and ideas and today church is still held back by this and it needs to move beyond and rediscover its true purpose and meaing as still has a lot of work to do to be a morally just org - db emphasis on suff - world is not perf despite developments and suff still present and christs still need to stand up against it as no real commitemntt from church to work for peace (idea of cheap and costly grace)
34
args against idea db theology is revelent today
- db lived in a very particular point in history so his ideas are focussed explicitly on his time and place and they arent transferrable to us today as world has moved on and now faces threats that are completely diff to those db was facing - db argued church should resist changes its practices to mirror socual change, howver this can be a good thing - christianity has modernised and adapted e.g cofe female vicars and quakers accepting gay marriage
35
reasons to support it is possible to always know g will (db beleived can)
- have bib which is verbally inspired so gives direct revs from g - 10 comms - therefore know how g wants us to live, j acts as ultimate rev can know gs will through j actions and words - have g gived reason and conscience which allows us to discern how g wants us to act, even if dont know in every sit can work out
36
resons aganst it is poss to always know g will
- are spiritually corrupt from the fall and so can never fully udertsnad or know gods will no matter how hard we try - epistemic dist - bib has been interpreted and translated so many tims not true words or meaning, contains contradictions so cant be certain in understanding so not reliable source
