As Hollywood films came out to watch at home, as German’s banned Hollywood, which magazine came out? What wave did this cause?

A

‘Greatest directors in history, early 50s. Which contrasted to french cinema, which was deemed to be boring and “cinema your dad watched”. Which caused the new french wave, like a breath of fresh air in filmmaking as it was a new approach.

In the USA who finalised the Auteur theory? What were the three criteria for auteurs?

A

Andrew Sardis (1962). Technical competence (setting/scene, camera and lighting), personal style (recognisable colour/frames) and interior meaning (has to have layers of meaning behind visuals).

Pauline Kael: hated the theory, as he believed that films include a whole crew, not just a director, and that others such as actors should be seen as auteurs too.
