Q

Impracticalities of sampling

A
  • Animals may move in/out of the area whilst counting; can lead to miscounting and inacurate results
  • Some animals may die during counting time
  • May be dificult to find all the animals during counting

Q

Equipment used in sampling

A
  • Quadrat - used when sampling plants, is the sample area
  • Pond net - used to capture mamals e.g fish, flying insects
  • Pooter - used to safely collect small invertebraes
  • Pitfall trap - used to trap animals by tricking them

Q

Sampling RP

A
  1. Pick 20 numbers at random between 1 and 10, and group them into 10 pairs of coordinates.
  2. Highlight the squares that correspond with your coordinates and count the number of e.g. daisies in each of those squares and record it.
  3. Find the total number of e.g. daisies, for the segment sample.
  4. Find the average in one square. Add all of the grid segment e.g. daisies together and divide by 10 to get the average.
  5. Multiply the average number of e.g. daises by 100/the total numer of grid segments.
  6. Count all the e.g. daises in the sample area and compare numbers.
