Question (Side A)
Answer (Side B)
What are Flagella?
Tail-like structures that rotate like a propeller to allow the cell to move through liquids.
What are Pili?
Tiny “hair-like” structures used for attachment to surfaces (like the digestive tract) and for transferring genetic material between bacteria.
What is a Slime Capsule?
An outer layer that protects bacteria from drying out or poisonous substances, and helps them stick to smooth surfaces.
What is a Plasmid?
A small, circular piece of DNA that stores “extra” genes (e.g., antibiotic resistance) not usually needed for day-to-day survival.
Define Binary Fission.
The process of asexual reproduction in bacteria where one cell divides into two genetically identical daughter cells.
Step 1 of Binary Fission?
Replication: The circular DNA and plasmids replicate (copy themselves).
Step 2 of Binary Fission?
Elongation: The cell grows larger and the two sets of DNA move to opposite ends (poles) of the cell.
Step 3 of Binary Fission?
Septum Formation: The cytoplasm begins to divide and a new cell wall (septum) starts to form down the middle.
Step 4 of Binary Fission?
Division: The cell splits into two daughter cells. Each has one copy of the main DNA but may have a variable number of plasmids.
