be sure caustic does not have ice crystals in bottom of sample, if so let sample warm to dissolve crystals
no temp measurement required
verify hydrometer clean, if not rinse with water and dry with kimwipe
under hood, using nitrile gloves transfer sample to graduate, without splashing. Sample should be poured to 250mL mark. Avoid formation of air bubbles
gently lower Baumé hydrometer and impart slight spin to allow hydrometer to float without touching walls.
allow time for hydrometer to come to rest and air bubbles to come to surface and dissipate
record hydrometer reading as point on hydrometer scale where surface of liquid cuts scale, record to one decimal place
if caustic opaque it will be necessary to add 0.1 correction
