What does Biology mean?
Bio - Life science
Ology - The study of
What are examples of living things and non living things?
Living - people, plants, animals
Non living - Rocks, metal, glass, plastic
What r organisms?
What we call all living things that surround us
What are the 6 characteristics of living things?
Cells, reproduction, heredity, metabolism, homeostasis, growth + development
What does Unicellular and Multicellular mean?
Uni = 1 cell
Multi = more then 1 cell (many)
What r cells?
Smallest unit capable of life functioning.
*All organisms r made up of 1 or more cells.
*It’s the basic structure of all living things.
What is Ameoba?
made up of 1 cell
What is reproduction?
The process by which organisms make more of their own kind.
* Reproduction is necessary 2 continue life b/c no organism can live 4ever.
What is heredity?
The passing of traits from parent 2 offspring.
A) Persons traits, ex: DNA
B) Mutation - change in the DNA of a gene, ex: cancer
What is metabolism?
The sum of all chemicals reactions in order 2 obtain & use energy 2 run processes of life.
*Most energy used by living things is Sunlight
*Humans obtain energy - eat meat (animals) + animals
*Plants obtain energy. - photosynthesis
What is photosynthesis?
Solar energy + water = sugar molecules
What is homeostasis?
The prices in which all living things maintain a stable environment in spite of changes in the external environment.
*Living organisms will die if they cannot maintain internal stability, ex: shivering, sweating, putting on a coat.
What is growth and development?
Growth = the process of increasing in size
Development = The process that creates growth + progress (positive changes)
What is a biologist?
The scientist that studies biology
What r scientific methods?
Set of procedures that biologists follow in order to gain knowledge in the world.
What r the 6 stages of the scientific method?
Observation, Q, Hypothesis, Experiment, Analysis, Conclusions
What does observation mean?
Statement of knowledge gained through the senses or w/ scientific equipment. Ex of scientific equipment includes microscope, computer
*Keep careful records of all kinds of facts.
What does Q mean?
What do scientists want 2 know?
Want 2 learn/know further unknown into after facts
What is hypothesis?
An educated guess or prediction
*Not a random guess.
What is an experiment?
Planned procedure to test a hypothesis
A) control group - group that receives NO experimental treatment
B) Experimental group - Group that receives the experimental treatment.
What is analysis?
Comparing results of the experiment to the hypothesis
What is conclusion?
At this point the hypothesis is either supported or rejected thru the analysis.
*Theory - set of related hypothesis that have been tested and confirmed many times by many scientists. Ex: The world is round.
What is the goal in science?
To develop theories
What is a compound microscope?
Light passes thru 1 or more lenses to produce an enlarged image of a specimen.
*Magnifying power, can view living things.
