1
Q

What is the rationale for use of biofuels in traffic

A
  • Prevention of climate change
    ➢ Raw materials are renewable
  • Securing availability of fuel
➢ Smaller dependency of crude oil
➢ Europe’s production of crude oil diminishes
➢ Use of traffic fuels increases
  • Supporting regional development
➢ New chances for producers of raw material

Q
  1. What are main raw-material sources for biodiesel and conversion routes (in Finland)?
A

Main oil crop in Finland: turnip rape (seed  crushing  oil)
Other sources: animal fats and used cooking oil.
Conversion route: oil extraction  pretreatment  transesterification with methanol  biodiesel + glycerol

Q
  1. Why has EU set on cap on conventional biofuels?
A

To limit negative sustainability impacts and steer policies towards advanced (non-food) biofuels; REDII/REDIII (EU’s Renewable Energy Directive) restrict conventional food-crop based biofuels and set binding targets for advanced fuels.
