Q

What are the steps for changing a car tire?

A

Secure the vehicle: Pull over to a safe, flat surface, turn on your hazard lights, and engage the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling.

Loosen the lug nuts: Before lifting the car with the jack, use the lug wrench to loosen the nuts slightly while the tire is still touching the ground.

Lift the car: Position the jack under the vehicle’s designated lift point and raise the car until the flat tire is off the ground.

Swap the tires: Remove the lug nuts and the flat tire, then slide the spare tire onto the bolts and hand-tighten the nuts.

Lower and tighten: Lower the car until the tire touches the ground, then use the wrench to fully tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern.

Drive with caution: Store your tools and the flat tire, then drive slowly to a repair shop, as most spares are only rated for short distances and low speeds.

Q

How do you jump start a vehicle using another vehicle (or a battery pack)?

A

Position the vehicles: Park the donor car near the dead car so the cables reach, ensure both engines are off, and engage the parking brakes.

Connect the positive terminals: Attach one red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery and the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the donor battery.

Connect the negative terminals: Attach one black clamp to the negative terminal of the donor battery and the other black clamp to a clean, unpainted metal part of the dead car’s engine block to ground it.

Start the engines: Start the donor car and let it run for a few minutes, then attempt to start the car with the dead battery.

Disconnect safely: Once the car starts, remove the cables in the exact reverse order they were attached and keep the jump-started car running for at least 20 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.

Using a power charger: For a plug-in charger, connect the red clamp to positive and black to negative while the charger is off, select the 12-volt setting, then plug it in and turn it on.

Using a portable jump pack: Connect the clamps to the battery terminals, power on the portable unit, and start the vehicle immediately.

An alternator is a generator-like component in your car’s engine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy to power the vehicle and recharge the battery while you drive. The engine block is the heavy metal casting that houses the cylinders and internal parts of the engine, providing a safe grounding point for electrical currents.
