What are brake shoes, and how do they function differently than brake pads within a "Drum Brake" system?
Brake shoes are the friction components used in "Drum Brake" systems, which are commonly found on the rear wheels of older vehicles or modern economy cars and trucks. Unlike brake pads, which "clamp" a disc from the outside, brake shoes are curved metal plates situated inside a heavy metal "Brake Drum." When the brakes are applied, a hydraulic "Wheel Cylinder" pushes the shoes outward, forcing them to press against the inner surface of the rotating drum. This creates the friction necessary to slow the vehicle. While drum brakes are generally less efficient at dissipating heat than disc brakes, they are very effective as "Parking Brakes" because they can "wedge" themselves against the drum to hold the vehicle firmly in place.
