The people who live in an area represented by an elected official.

When power is shared or spread out from a central government to smaller governments or regions.

The set of laws and principles that outline how a country is governed.
dissent
To disagree with or speak out against the government or majority opinion.
executive
The branch of government that enforces laws and runs the country (Prime Minister, Cabinet, etc.).
federalism
A system where power is divided between national and provincial governments.
governor general
the King’s representative in Canada who carries out ceremonial duties and gives Royal Assent to laws.
house of commons`
The main elected law-making body in Canada’s Parliament.
independant
A politician who does not belong to a political party.
legislative
The branch of government that makes laws (Parliament or provincial legislatures).

People elected to represent ridings in the House of Commons.
minority government
A government where the ruling party has less than half the seats in the House of Commons.
representative democracy
A system where citizens elect others to make decisions and pass laws for them.
riding
A geographic area represented by one Member of Parliament.
royal assent
The final approval given by the Governor General for a bill to become law.
senate
The upper house of Parliament that reviews and suggests changes to bills passed by the House of Commons.
speaker of the house
The person who manages debates and keeps order in the House of Commons.
