What is an element?
A basic substance made of only 1 type of atom and cannot be broken down.
What is a compound?
A chemical substance made of two or more elements chemically bonded together.
Whats a homogenous mixture?
You cannot see the difference. the componets are evenly distribujted
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances blended but are physically seperate and can be seperated by physical methods.
Whats a heterogenous mixture?
You can see the difference. (solution)
What are the 3 particles in an atom.
Subatomic particles, protons, neutrons, electrons.
What are protons?
Have a postive charge, not invloved in bonding, affects mass of an atom, amount of protons changes the element.
What is matter?
Any thing that takes up space or weight.
What are atoms?
Fundamental building blocks of all matter.
What are molecules?
A group of atoms bonded together.
What are neutrons?
They stable the atom, relativeley have the same mass as a proton, have no charge(neutral)
What are electrons?
They have a negative charge, bonding between atoms is based on electrons, they cannot be broken down, in shells that orbit the neucleus.
What is the neucleus?
Its made of protons and neutons, has an overall postive charge, the reason why atoms are stable, reason why there are different types of elements(bc number of protons and neutrons in it)
How many electrons in each shell?
2 in first, 8 in second, 18 in third
Whats the law on conservation of mass?
Matter cannot be destroyed or created only rearranged, mass of products and reactants are the same, open system lets mass escape while closed traps it.
