Flagella
3 parts: Filament (long, thin, helical structure composed of protein flagellin), Hook (curved sheath which helps with movement), Basal body (stack of rings firmly anchored in cell wall) – rotates 360 degrees – functions in motility
2 Major Groups of Appendages
Motiity: flagella and axial filaments (periplasmic flagella or endoflagella) and Attachment (or channels, fimbriae and pili)
Monotrichous
single flagellum at one end
Lophotrichous
small bunches (or tufts) emerging from the same site
Amphitrichous
1 flagella at both ends of the cell
Peritrichous
flagella dispersed over the surface of the cell
