Antisocial personality disorder

A
  • exists in individuals 18+ but evidence occurs before age 15
  • early adolescent signs - chemical use, early voluntary sexual intercourse, impaired ability to sustain lasting relationships, ADHD, no discipline, & lack of parental figures
  • tend to antagonize, manipulate, or treat others harshly or w/callous indifference
  • typically, can’t fulfill responsibilities related to family, work, or school

Sociopathic behavior

A
  • rooted in severe deficiencies in developing conscience
  • can be caused by absence or neglect of parental figures
  • Sociopaths - lack conscience, don’t know right from wrong
  • can be charming (superficial) & straightforward & at same time steal from you
  • don’t take responsibility, shallow emotions

New Jersey v. T.L.O (1985)

A

teacher found 2 girls smoking in bathroom, then took them to school admin office, administrator asked for TLO’s purse & found money, marijuana, cigarettes, drug paraphernalia & an incriminating letter, police were called, case referred to juv. ct., SC ruled that schoolchildren have reasonable expectation of privacy, but school officials can conduct reasonable searches to maintain safety

Bethel school district 403 v. Fraser (1986)

A

student taken off list to be graduation speaker b/c of explicit language at campaign time (1st amend to free speech), “I know a man who is firm – in his pants, in his shirt, is character, but most of all… his belief in you, the students of Bethel is firm,” court ruled it was constitutional for school to suspend him for his speech

Ingraham v. Wright (1977)

A

14-year-old 8th grader accused of not leaving school stage when asked to, taken to school principal’s office, said that he wasn’t guilty, principal ordered Ingraham to bend over & he refused, then forcibly placed faced down on top of table, held down by 2 men while principal paddled him 20x, bruises required medical attention - home rest for 11 days, parents sued school district but lost, student doesn’t require hearing before being paddled, constitution prohibition against cruel & unusual punishment doesn’t apply to corporal punishments of children in public schools
