When is a repeated measures design used
When evaluating the mean difference between two measurements taken from a single sample
What is the difference between an independent measures design and a repeated measures design
An independent measures design measures mean difference from two different samples while a repeated measures design compares mean difference from the same (one) sample
What are the strengths and weaknesses of using a repeated-measures design over an independent-measures design
Strengths:
Requires fewer participants than needed for an independent measures design, individual differences in performance from one participant to another are eliminiated, reduces the variance between subjects which reduces the estimated standard error and then increases power, and particularly well suited for examining changes that occur over time
Weaknesses:
Known as testing effect, exposure to the first condition may influence scores in the second condition, floor and ceiling effects
