2
Q

Describe arteries (4)

A
  1. Large blood vessels with thick walls
  2. Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart except for the pulmonary artery
  3. No valves as high pressure prevents back flow
  4. Pulse is heart beat in artery

Q

Describe capillaries (3)

A
  1. Small blood vessels linking arteries and veins
2.Walls are only one cell thick
  2. Easy for substances eg. Oxegyn to diffuse from blood into cells and waste to pass from cells to blood

Q

Describe veins (3)

A

1 Thinner walls than arteries
2. Carry deoxygenated blood to the heart except for the pulmonary vein.
3. Valves stop backflow

Q

Name the four jobs blood does

A
  1. Transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapour.
  2. Transport food, waste, and hormones.
  3. Transports heat and keeps her body temperature at 37°.
  4. Defend against disease.

Q

Name the three main parts of the heart

A
  1. It is divided by the septum.
2 it is split into four chambers( two atria, two ventricles)
3 semilunar valves allow blood to flow out of heart into aorta and pulmonary artery

16
Q

Where does oxygenated blood go after entering the heart?

A

Through the left atrium into the left ventricle

17
Q

What happens to blood in the left ventricle?

A

The blood is pushed through the aorta and around the body

18
Q

Which side of the heart has oxygenated blood?

A

The left side

19
Q

Which side of the heart has a thicker wall and why?

A

The left side has a thicker wall as it has more pressure on it with more blood

20
Q

Where does deoxygenated blood enter through the right atrium?

A

The deoxygenated blood enters through the vena cava and into the right atrium

21
Q

What happens after blood enters the right atrium?

A

It is pushed into the right ventricle and then push out the pulmonary artery to be pumped towards the lungs

22
Q

Where does oxygenated blood go?

A

The oxygenated blood goes around the body

23
Q

Where does deoxygenated blood go?

A

It goes to the heart in order to be pumped to the lungs and become oxygenated

24
Q

What is the average heart rate?

25
26
Name five factors that can increase high blood pressure
1. Smoking. 2. Obesity. 3. Lack of physical activity. 4. High salt diet. 5. Alcohol consumption.
27
What is blood pressure?
The measurement of how easily the heart can pump oxygen and nutrients to their destination
28
What are the functions of the circulatory system?
- To transport gases, nutrients, hormones waste and heat - Temperature regulation as blood moves around the body heat is transferred between organs - Protection, fight infection and prevents blood loss
29
What does plasma do?
It transports dissolved gases, nutrients, hormones, waste, and heat
30
Describe blood flow
On back of sheet
31
What do red blood cells do?
Transport oxygen by forming a weak bond with haemoglobin to create oxyhaemoglobin, this bond is easily broken to release oxygen
32
What do white blood cells do?
Fight infection by ingesting disease causing microbes or by producing special chemicals called antibodies
33
Draw the three types of blood cells
Look it up
34
What type of circulation do we have?
Double circulation
35
What is a double circulatory system?
Blood system where blood flows in two separate pathways around the body
36
What are the two advantages of a double circulatory system?
- Quick delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the body - Blood can be carried to certain areas
37
What are the two circuits in our bodies?
The pulmonary circuit between the lungs and the heart The systemic circuit between the heart and the rest of the body
38
What does the plasma do?
Transports dissolved gases, nutrients, hormones, waste and heat
39
Where is heat from the body transferred from?
Heat comes from cellular respiration in your cells, blood pics of the heat from the body cells and carries it around the body
