Stagnation in the Soviet Union

The Stagnation in the Soviet Union was from the 60s to the mid 80s and was a period of economic decline and poor living standards due to massive military spending and low productivity. It was coined Stagnation by Mikhail Gorbachev.
Eastern European Nations

The eastern European nations were Albania, Poland, Romania, Russia, East Germany, Hungary, and Yugoslavia. The formed the Eastern Bloc led by soviet communism.
Brezhnev Doctrine & Prague Spring

Prague Spring was when people in Czechoslovakia launched a socialist movement were they advocated for “Socialism with a Human Face”. The soviets responded with crushing the revolution and enforcing the Brezhnev doctrine. The Brezhnev Doctrine said that the Soviet Union could now send any military troops into countries that tried to revolt or stop being communist.

Women Attaining Key Political Positions

Now that women are gaining more rights they were able to be apart of the political positions that they weren’t able to be at, one of them being Margaret Thatcher who was the Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to be Prime Minister in Great Britain and help modernize there army, put cuts on education, and caused high poverty. Her policies when she was in power was Thatcherism and was known as the “Iron Lady”.
Continued Cold War Issues and Détente

China becomes communist and America is afraid of the the Domino Theory, and Detente is a time period were the Cold War calmed down for a bit and treaties were made to help limit the amount of bombs.
Vietnam War

The second Vietnam War was the U.S. supporting the South Vietnam who were fighting communist North Vietnam and the terrorist group know as the the Vietcong. It ended with the North winning and Vietnam became communist.
China

Mao Zedong win and turns China into a communist state which scares US. They also help North Korea in the Korean War which also ends up in a cease fire.

A time period were the US and the Soviet Union went into a peace and degrated and set limits to having bombs aswell as improving each others economys and focusing more on there countries people instead of an arms race.

They were apart of Detente and helping settle tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet Union by accepting post WW2 borders, focusing on human rights, and trying to work together economicaly.
Afghanistan

Soviet Union supported the Communist side of Afghanistan and the U.S. supported the Democratic side and the fought with each other eventally leading to a stail mate and the Soviet Union with drawling from the war.

Technology greatly advanced since the end of the 2nd World War. Radar by the British, atomic bombs by American scientist Oppenheimer, and jet planes by Germany were developed during the war. Most inventions like the computer and the space satellite were invented to further American and Soviet military expansions.
The Environment and the Green Movements

People became more concerned about the environment in the 1970’s. Air, earth, and ocean pollution became serious problems due to the growing industries like cars. Political parties were created with environmentalism as their main focus, called the Green Parties, around Europe and North America.
Post-modern Thought

Describes artistic thinking since the 1970’s. Rejects objective truths and focuses on relative natures and abstract objects. Generally tries to criticize Western culture. Poststructuralism or deconstruction says that all culture can be analyzed in a variety of ways, meaning there is no true meaning of something.
Art, Music, Literature

Moves away from the futuristic qualities of Modernism. Popular art forms included live performances, glassmaking, and metal smithing. Mixes old tradition with current trends. Literature focuses on magic realism, and music became to more open to different sounds of cultures like Indian and Greek music.
Popular Culture: Increasingly Global

The internet and improvement of communications and the ability to spread media led to the belief that global communication would lead to a blending of all cultures, however, while this idea was too optimistic, understanding and the spread of culture did greatly increase
Mass Sports

Satellite TV led to the global televising of large events and became their main source of revenue. This large-scale publicization of events and the increase in their size and importance led to the politicization of large mass-sporting events, and many nations used it as a form of protest.

Globalization was the increase in the sharing of knowledge + culture until it reached that of a global level, as seen in Americanization, mass sports, mass media thru satellite TV, etc.
