Correlations Flashcards

(10 cards)

1
Q

What’s a correlation?

A
  • involves the same participant providing data for two measures
  • do NOT show cause and effect
  • shows relationship between two variables
  • e.g. the more alcohol you drink per week, the higher the risk of depression

Q

What’s a positive correlation?

A
  • as one variable increases, the other variable increases with it
  • correlation coefficient of +1 would be perfect positive correlation
  • 0.7 and above is considered to be a strong positive correlation

What’s a negative correlation?

A
  • as one variable increases, the other variable decreases
  • correlation coefficient of -1 would be perfect negative correlation
  • -0.7 is considered to be a strong negative correlation

Correlational Hypotheses

A
  • not the same as hypotheses written for experiments
  • no IV and DV in a correlation
  • still has to clearly state the expected relationship between the variables
  • must be clearly operationalised

Correlation Strengths

A
  • little manipulation of variables needed
  • can show relationships that might not be expected
  • show statistical relationships between variables
  • can study natural things
