What certs & docs would new crew joining require?

Answer 1

• STCW Basic courses including refreshers.
• ENG 1.
• Discharge book.
• Passport.
• SEA or crew agreement.

Additionally, depending on rank
* Ships cook see (MSN 1846).
* Deck Ratings / Nav Ratings.
* Deck officers OOW and above COC, auxiliary certs and ECDIS generic + type approval
* Engineers CoC.

Do you have to have an ENG1?

No, can be an ENG1 equivalent from an approved country, found in MSN 1815

ML5 onshore only - canals, rivers, waterways etc.

Can you sail with an expired ENG1?

Yes, up to 3 months

No, original copy must be available.

Considerations when employing young persons?

Answer 5

• Minimum working age of 16
• Those under 18 must not be assigned work which is likely to jeopardise their health and safety
• Risk assessment must be carried out
• Cannot work at night unless part of specific training. Night hours are at least 9 hours and not between midnight and 5am
• HOWR = 12 consecutive hours, 4.5 hours of work then 30min break. 2 days rest per week
• Signed onto separate young persons crew list

• 77 hours in any 7 day period
• Rest may be divided into no more than 2 periods, 1 must be at least 6 hours and total 10 hours

Onboard complaints procedure

The purpose of the on-board complaints procedure is to allow seafarers to lodge complaints relating to any matter that is alleged to constitute a breach of the requirements of the Maritime Labour Convention

• Seek to resolve the complaint at the lowest level possible
• Must be available to all crew onboard
• Enable a seafarer to complain directly to the Master and appropriate external authorities - DPA, flag state
• Include the right of the seafarer to be accompanied or represented when making a complaint
• Ensure that the seafarer does not suffer any detriment or victimization for making a complaint

Purpose of training vessels and minimum age

(a) Instruction in the principles of responsibility, resourcefulness, loyalty and team endeavour, and/or;
(b) Instruction in navigation and seamanship, marine engineering or other shipboard related skills.
