What are the 7 CSDM domains?
Foundation
The Foundation domain contains shared reference and lifecycle data (such as value streams, business processes, products, contracts, and lifecycle stages) that underpins all other CSDM domains but is generally not used in CMDB relationships. It ensures consistent terminology, ownership, and lifecycle tracking across services, applications, assets, and locations before and during CMDB implementation. Common personas: Process Owner, Data Steward, Product Owner, Contract Manager.
Ideation & Strategy
Ideation and Strategy captures business ideas, strategic intent, and desired outcomes that guide investment decisions and service evolution. It connects product ideas and planning items to strategic priorities, goals, and measurable targets, ensuring alignment between execution and business value. Common persona: Product Owner.
Design & Planning
Design and Planning represents the logical enterprise design needed to realize strategy, including business capabilities, business applications, and information objects. These records support architecture and planning decisions and are not direct targets of ITSM processes like Incident or Change. Common personas: Enterprise Architect, Digital Product Owner.
Service Delivery
Service Delivery represents running, operational services and their underlying components that can be monitored, impacted, and supported through ITSM and CSM. This domain includes service instances, application services, and technology management services that are selectable for Incident, Problem, Change, and Install Base Items. Common personas: Service Instance Owner, Service Delivery Owner, Service Provider.
Build & Integration
Build and Integrate provides visibility into how digital products and applications are developed and assembled, including DevOps data, SDLC components, and AI digital assets. It models the logical build structure that leads to deployable solutions, but remains outside direct ITSM operational use. Common persona: Teams.
Service Consumption
Service Consumption models the business-facing view of services that are delivered to and consumed by internal or external customers. It focuses on business services, service offerings, and the request catalog, expressing value and outcomes rather than technical detail. Common personas: Business Relationship Manager, Customer Service Manager.
Manage Portfolios
Manage Portfolios provides a cross-domain, owner-centric view that brings together services, applications, and service instances. It enables service owners to oversee value, cost, risk, and lifecycle across the full service landscape to support informed decision-making.
