Definition of Octa?
Octa is a unit of measure to describe the cloud cover in a given location. 1 Octa = 1/8 of the sky in a given location covered in cloud.
Give the octa scale.
0: Sky clear (SKC)
1-2: Few (FEW)
3-4: Scattered (SCT)
5-7: Broken (BKN)
8: Overcast (OVC)
How to measure cloud base?
Always round down!
Below 5000ft in steps of 100ft
Above 5000ft in steps of 1000ft
Always 1st layer and the following layer of 3 or more Octa.
How to measure visibility?
Always round down!
Up to 5km in steps of 100m.
Beyond 5km in steps of 1000m.
Weather report: Suitable for low alt tactics?
Vis above 5000m + max 35knots wind
Ceiling above 1500ft and less than 3 Octa.
Weather report: Suitable for med/high alt tactics?
1-2 octa at 10000ft.
Weather report: unsuitable for med/high alt tactics?
8 octa below 5000ft.

What is Danger Close?
A term used to inform GFC’s, FDC’s and aircrews of the proximity of the intended weapon impact point to the closest friendly forces. Someone is in danger close distance of a weapons impact point if the probability of incapacitation is 0.1% of higher.

Risk Estimate Distance: The distance described per ordnance when one is considered to be in a danger close situation.

What is a FSCL?
A Line installed by the LCC or Amphibious component commander which denotes the need for deconfliction when engaging targets beyond this line.

A line installed by a GFC (battalion and up) beyond this line GBFS can freely create effects without prior coordination.
What is a RFL?
A line between 2 converging units. No Fires or effects can cross this line without prior coordination between the GFC’s on each side of the RFL.
