What is development?

A

Development is the progress of a country in terms of economic growth, the use of technology and human welfare. There are different types of development, including economic, social, cultural and environmental developments.

How is development measured?

A

Traditionally, a country’s level of development has been shown by its wealth (economic), e.g. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or Gross National Income (GNI). However, there are other indicators around now, which focus on different aspects of development, such as human development, gender equality, the environment and even people’s level of happiness!

Factors effecting development

A

Social – Education, workforce skills, population growth, gender inequality and disease. (Factors relating to values of society).
Historical – Time and legacy of past economic, social and political events. (Events from the past that affect the current situation).
Economic – Foreign inward investment and trade. (Creating and spending money).
Environmental – Natural resources (energy, minerals, soil, climate) and location/accessibility.
Political – The quality of governance and political stability. Laws, regulations & policies.
Technological – Infrastructure, technology, science and engineering.
