Physician Task: Applying Foundational Science Concepts > Differences between Contralatral hemiballismus versus Huntington’s disease > Flashcards
What are the properties of Contralatral hemiballismus?
Contra hemiballismus—sudden onset; no mood changes; lesion in subthalamic nucleus (nucleus of subthalamus of the basal ganglia)
What are the properties of Huntington’s disease?
Huntington’s disease–gradual onset; genetic (aut. Dominant CAG trinucleotide repeat in huntingtin gene) chorea + mood changes; lesions particularly in the basal ganglia component, the striatum (caudate nucleus + putamen )
