DRIVER FAULTS Flashcards

(7 cards)

1
Q

Observations at junctions

Fault: Fails to look both ways before emerging.

A

• Cause: Rushing, nervousness, or focusing only on oncoming traffic from one side.
• Consequence: Increased risk of collision with unseen traffic/pedestrians.
• Correction: Pause, use a proper “mirror–signal–position–speed–look” routine, double-check both directions, emerge slowly.

Q

Use of mirrors
Fault: Does not check mirrors before changing lanes.

A

•Cause: Lack of habit formation, focusing too much on steering.
• Consequence: May cut across another vehicle, causing danger.
• Correction: Build mirror checks into routine (“Mirrors before signal or manoeuvre”), practice with commentary driving.

Q

Speed control
Fault: Driving too fast into a bend.

A

•Cause: Poor hazard perception or late braking.
• Consequence: Loss of control, drifting wide into oncoming traffic.
• Correction: Encourage “slow in, safe out” approach, use progressive braking before bend, maintain gear that gives control.

Q

Positioning

Fault: Drifts too close to parked cars

A

• Cause: Misjudgement of space or over-focusing on centre line.
• Consequence: Risk of scraping or colliding with parked vehicles / doors opening.
• Correction: Encourage early mirror check, move out sooner with correct positioning, maintain safe clearance.

Q

Use of signals

Fault: Signals too late when turning.

A

• Cause: Lack of forward planning.
• Consequence: Misleads following drivers, risk of rear-end collision.
• Correction: Teach “mirror–signal–manoeuvre” earlier, link signal timing to decision points (e.g., before junction, not on it)

Q

Clutch and gear use

Fault: Coasts (clutch down too long

A

approaching junction).
• Cause: Nervous habit, lack of understanding of coasting effect.
• Consequence: Reduced control, less effective braking, poor observation due to focusing on pedals.
• Correction: Reinforce need to brake first, clutch only just before stop/change gear, practice
