Accelerator

A
  1. Set the gas
    (press the accelerator pedal slightly)
  2. A little more gas
    (more pressure on the pedal)
  3. Ease off the gas
    (Gently take your foot off the the accelerator)

Foot brake

A
  1. Cover the brake
    (Position your right foot over the footbrake)
  2. Squeeze the brake
    (Progressively put light pressure on the brake)
  3. Brake gently to stop
  4. Off brake
    (This occasionally needs to be said firmly or repeated as it is difficult to prevent an L driver stopping unnecessarily)

CLUTCH

A
  1. Cover the clutch
    (Place left foot over the clutch)
  2. Clutch down
    (To the floor)
  3. Clutch up gently to biting point
    (When moving off or emerging)
  4. Gently bring the clutch up
    (As the vehicle is moving away)

Parking brake

A
  1. Apply the parking brake
  2. Release the parking brake
    (Pull up, press the button and lower the parking brake)
  3. Prepare the parking brake
    (Often needed on hill starts where the pressure is taken on the parking brake and the button pressed in)

Gear change

A
  1. Left hand on the gear lever, clutch down fully, off gas
  2. Change into 2nd gear
  3. Gently raise the clutch, squeeze the gas
  4. Hand on the steering wheel

Steering wheel

A
  1. Hold the wheel in the 10 to 2 position
  2. Gently steer to the left (used for pulling in)
  3. Gently steer to the, right straighten the wheel (used for pulling in)

Turning left into a minor road

A

1.Left hand to the top of the wheel, release the right hand
2. Pull down with the left hand, push up with the right hand (pul-push steering)
Once correct amount of steering has been applied…)
3. Pull down with the right hand, push with the left hand back to 10 to 2 position

Moving off
(P,MSM routine)

A

Prepare to move off from the side of the road
Preparation:
clutch down fully, select 1st gear
Place left hand on the parking brake
Set gas and gently raise the clutch to biting point
MIRRORS:
Check ahead and in your rearview mirror, right-hand door mirror. If there is a safe opportunity to move off look into blind arear and if it’s safe there…..
SIGNAL:
Signal right if there is another road user to benefit from it
MANOEUVRE:
Release the hand brake, steer right a little (1/8 of a turn) left a little straighten the wheel, raise the clutch completely and set more gas
LOOK WELL AHEAD AND CHECK YOUR REARVIEW MIRRORS AGAIN

Pulling in to stop
(MSM routine)

A
  1. Check your rearview and left door mirrors
  2. Signal left (only if there is another road user to benefit)
    3 Ease off the gas and cover the brake and clutch
    4 Gently brake, steer left a little straighten, steer right a little ( when front nearside wheel is close to the kerb) and straighten the wheel
  3. Clutch down and gently brake to stop. Keep feet still
  4. Parking brake on, select neutral
  5. Cancel hour indicator signal. Relax your feet.
  6. Always ensure that the final stop position is safe and is discussed with the pupil

Approaching a junction to turn left

A

Take the next road on the left
• Check the rearview and left door mirrors
• signal left
• Brake a little ( down to 10mph) off the brake
• clutch down fully, select 2nd gear, clutch up fully
• Look into side road
• put your left hand to the top of the wheel and pull-push left
•(once in the new road) steer right and straighten the wheel
• Check your rearview mirror, more gas (if safe to accelerate)

Emerging right at a T junction

A

At the end of the road , turn right
• check the rearview and right door mirrors
• Signal right
• steer slightly right and position the car close to the centre line
• Cover the brake and clutch, brake a little and start to look both ways
IF THE JUNCTION IS CLOSED (BLIND) OR VERY BUSY, INSTRUCT YOUR PUPIL TO STOP…)
•I would like you to stop at the giveway lines. Keep looking both ways
• clutch down (2 cars lengths from end of the road), select 1st gear, brake to stop
•parking brake on (if uphill or waiting)
•set the gas, gently find the biting point, look both ways, tell me ( or tell pupil) when it is safe to go?
•when safe to emerge , release the parking brake, look right , steer right, clutch up slowly, straighten the wheel (in the new road)
•check rearview mirror more gas
(IF THE JUNCTION IS OPEN AND IT IS SAFE TO EMERGE )
• Clutch down select 1st or 2nd gear (as appropriate ) look both ways, is it safe to go ( YES), clutch up gently off the brake. Look right and steer right
•Straighten the wheel in the new road, check rearview mirror , more gas
