Q

What is induced potential?

A

If an electrical conductor moves relative to a magnetic field or if there is a change in the magnetic field around Γ  conductor, a potential difference is induced across the conductor.

Q

What is the generator effect?

A

If an electrical conductor moves relative to a magnetic field or if there is a change in the magnetic field around Γ  conductor, a potential difference is induced across the conductor.

IF THE CONDUCTOR IS PART OF COMPLETE CIRCUIT, Γ€ CURRENT IS INDUCED IN THE CONDUCTOR. GENERATOR EFFECT

Q

How does the bulb light when the coil is rotated?

A

When it is rotated it cuts through the magnetic field lines of the permanent magnet
This induces Γ  voltage across the coil
When the coil is connected to an external circuits current flows in the circuit and the bulb lights

How to deliver electricity via the national grid?

A

Power station
Step up transformer
Cables and pylons (high voltage transmission lines)
Step down transformer
Homes/consumers

17
Q

Voltage in power stations

18
Q

Step up transformer voltage

19
Q

Step down transformer voltage

20
Q

What is the national grid?

A

Step up and step down transformer and high voltage transmission lines

21
Q

What does a step up transformer do?

A

Increase voltage

22
Q

Purpose of step up transfomers

A

Minimise energy loss as less energy is lost in cable when Pd is high due to resistive heating.
Reduces the current by increasing the voltage to reduce the dissipated power

23
Q

Power wasted =

A

I (current) SQUARED x R (resistance)

24
Q

What does the step down transformer do?

A

Decrease voltage

25
Purpose of step down transformer
Safer to use for consumers so there is a risk of explosion
26
How does a step up transformer increase the voltage?
More secondary than primary coils
27
How does a step down transformer decrease the voltage?
More primary than secondary coils
28
How do transformers work?
1. Alternating Pd in primary coil 2. Current flow (AC) 3. Alternating magnetic field around the coil is produced 4. Induces magnetic field in the soft iron core 5. Induces Γ  Pd (Alternating) in the secondary coil 6. Causes an AC in the load
29
Power in =
Power out for an 100% efficient transformer (ideal)
