WHERE ARE THE ELECTRONS?
The electrons of an atom are orbiting the nucleus in SHELLS.
what energy store do electrons have
The electrons have an electrostatic energy store because they are near the nucleus.
how many elecytons can each shell hold
Each shell can only hold a set amount of electrons before it becomes ‘FULL’.
1st Shell: Can hold 2 electrons.
2nd Shell: Can hold 8 electrons.
3rd Shell: Can hold 8 electrons.
REMEMBER: 2,8,8!
HOW TO DRAW THE DIAGRAMS PROPERLY
As you add electrons to a shell, only draw them at the up, down, left and right positions:
If there are more than four electrons, you start to put them in pairs:
