Aldosterone
A
Helps to regulate salt and water balance in the sweat glands and GI tract
Increased aldosterone secretion can occur with decreased sodium and decreased water volume
- high sodium can suppress aldosterone

If some one has an aldosterone deficiency
A
- use fludrocortisone it stimulates the aldosterone receptor very avidly
- some synthetic glucocorticoids can have mineralocorcticoid activity

Treatment of Pheochromocytoma
A
- give alpha blocker like phenoxybenzamine first
- then give beta blocker
If you give beta blocker without alpha then you can increase the hypertension but having uninhibited alpha vasoconstriction

Adrenal Insufficiency

- can use metyrapone stimulation test = blocks the last step of cortisol synthesis (11-deoxycortisol –> cortisol)
- Normal response is decreased cortisol and compensatory increased ACTH
- in adrenal insufficiency ACTH remains decreased after test
