Ethical Dilemmas

Greek ethos, meaning customary or conventional
What does ethics study?
Study of a particular group of normative judgement
-Those judgments that are concerned with what is morally right and wrong, or morally good and bag
What are judgments of moral right and wrong based on?
Standards that:
-are not laid down by authoritative bodies
-override self-interest,
-and are based on impartial considerations
Ethics converts values into action

-values state what is critically important
-a firm’s moral standards and values help guide ethics in decision making
-values influence which behaviors we think are ethical
Reasons to be concerned with ethics
Hypernorms
Values represented are acceptable to all cultures and al organizations
Consistent Norms
These are more culturally specific but are consistent with hyper and legitimate norms
Moral free space
this is the area where on finds norms that are inconsistent with at least some other legitimate norms existing in other countries
Illegitimate norms
These are norms that are incompatible with hypernorms
