Fentanyl : Introduction
A short acting synthetic narcotic analgesic.
Fentanyl: Indication
1) Moderate to severe pain
2) Acute Coronary Syndrome where GTN has been ineffective.
Fentanyl: Contraindications
1) Hypersensitivity
2) Age <1 (IV/IO)
3) Occluded nasal passage (IN)
Fentanyl: Considerations
NARCD
1) Nausea/vomiting
2) Adopt a low threshold to engage with the ED team if pain remains difficult to control
3) Respiratory depression, monitor O2 for all patients having fentanyl
4) Cardiovascular effects - bradycardia, hypotension
5) Drowsiness
