Actions
Reduces the brainstem’s responsiveness to CO2 and depressess pontine and medullary respiratory centers that regulate respiratory rhythmicity, causing respiratory depression.
CNS depressant that binds to opiate receptors causing analgesia and euphoria.
Indications
Pain.
Isolated extremity fractures.
Maintainance of analgesia and as an adjunct to RSI.
Contraindications
Increased ICP. Respiratory depression. Severe hepatic / renal impairment. hypotension hypersensativity
Side effects
Respiratory depression. Hypotension. Bradycardia. AMS. N/V. Dizziness
Precautions
Use with caution in patients with traumatic brain injury.
Risk of increasing chest wall rigidity and respiratory depression, so use the SPO2.
Narcan fixes both of these side effects.
