- What are the FIELD STYLES you CANNOT use a VALUE LIST with?
EDIT BOX and DROP DOWN CALENDAR.
ALL the others let you associate a VALUE LIST with the field.
- What are VALUE LISTS for?
They give you more efficient access to a FEW FREQUENTLY USED TERMS, numbers, dates, or times.
- Using a FIELD CONTROL, you can easily enter a value from the VALUE LIST into the field. How do you tell FileMaker how you want these choices presented?
by selecting one of the FIELD CONTROL STYLES.
- As your database grows, one of the biggest challenges you meet is:
INCONSISTENT DATA. That’s why VALUE LISTS are so useful, they ensure you always enter MILWAUKEE and never MILWAKEE or MILWAUKE.
- How do you create a new VALUE LIST?

- When you choose NEW (Value List), you are given three choices:
a. Use values from field
b. Use value list from another file
c. Use custom values.
- What if you want an item to come up on top of the value list (say, Vegas), and everything else below?
use a hyphen (“ - “) under Vegas.
- How do you attach a VALUE LIST (i.e., list of cities) to a field?
a. Select the FIELD;
FORMAT–>
FIELD/CONTROL–>
SET UP.
b. From the DISPLAY AS pop up menu, choose DROP DOWN LIST.
c. Then choose CITY (Value List) from the DISPLAY VALUES FROM Pop Up menu.
- Why did you use a DROP DOWN LIST in the above example?
because it lets you type anything you want in the field if the city you’re after is not on the list.
