OSHA 1926.150
requires a fire extinguisher, rated 2A or above, shall be provided for each 3,000 ft2 of the protected building area, or major fraction thereof.
Travel distance from any point of the protected area to the nearest fire extinguisher shall not exceed 100 ft.
Extinguisher Types
Fire Class extinguisher
A: combustibles (wood, paper, cloth).
–Water Extinguisher
B: Flammable liquids (grease, gasoline, oil).
–Foam Extinguisher
C: Energized electrical equipment (non-conductive agent).
–Dry chemical/Halon/Carbon Dioxide
D: Combustible metals (magnesium, titanium) – specific to metal.
K: Commercial cooking oils/fats (kitchen fires).
Type of Extinguishers and usage
Class A = Water based:
Wood, cloth, paper, rubber and many plastics.
Class B = Foam based: Petroleum greases, tars, oils, oil-based paints, solvents, lacquers, alcohol, and flammable gases.
Class C = Dry Chemical
Fires that involve energized electrical equipment
Class D = Combustible Metals
Fires in combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium, sodium, lithium, and potassium.
Class K =
Fires in cooking appliances that involve combustible cooking media (vegetable or animal oils and fats)
