What is a typical crew brief?

When does the departure brief happen?
After preflight flows, prior to Preflight check.
What is the Departure Brief acronym?

What is the rejected takeoff criteria?
- Prior to 80: Warnings, Cautions, Abnormal
- 80-V1: Engine failure, Fire, loss of directional control
- After V1: we’re flying, it’s an in flight emergency.
When is the Preflight check completed?
After departure brief
When is it OK to accomplish only the diamond checklist items?
- crew AND airplane relationship does not change
- Crew is certain no flight deck switches were moved
- Airplane not left unattended by flight crew
When are Before start flows, and subsequently the before start check completed?
After Captain transmits “standby” to tug driver
When does FO call for pushback clearance?
After CA verbally reviews takeoff data and FO confirms it and before start check is complete.
Describe engine start procedure.
- Plan to allow adequate warm up time prior to takeoff
- Verify at least 33 PSI of pressure
- Engine start/stop selector-lift then hold for 3 seconds in “start” detent then back to “run”

During an engine start, what are the normal parameters to observe?
- N2 increasing
- IGN at 7% N2, fuel flow at 20%
- ITT rise within 30 seconds of fuel flow
- N2/N1 accelerate normally and you see positive oil pressure
- notice IGN goes out at 50% N2
- when ITT limit resets from 815 to 965 AND engine is stable call “NORMAL START”.
After engine start, you see the ITT limit jump from 815 to 965 and are looking for “stable” conditions before you call “NORMAL START”. What are these stable conditions?
- N1 about 20%
- ITT around 450
- N2 58.5% or more within 90 sec
- Fuel flow 550 lbs/hr (aprox)
- oil pressure 25-95 PSI
After the cleared to taxi salute, what happens?
-PIC says “select takeoff flaps ___, flight controls check. (Performs check) Rudder check. (Performs check) Before taxi check”
When does the captain do his taxi flow?
After taxi clearance has been received
Do the taxi side lights have to be off when stopped?
Yes
When is the takeoff brief accomplished?
Done by the PF as part of the before takeoff check.
What is the takeoff brief acronym?
HARD (all done by PF)
- Heading
- Altitude
- Restrictions (speed, altitude, climb gradients.)
- Departure Fix (Summarize SID/ODP if it’s more complicated than a basic heading and altitude)
A typical takeoff brief is:
“This will be an RNAV departure, initial altitude 10,000, cross GYWNN at 6,000 or above, CWARD at 12,000 or below, first fix is WNFLD.”
FPT 1 will do the CWARD RNAV departure out of KSAN.
