Frameworks for Teaching Language Components
When teaching grammar, vocabulary, or functions, teachers use structured frameworks to make learning clear and effective. Two common frameworks are PPP and ECRIF.
PPP Framework
Warm-up: A short activity (like a proverb, tongue twister, or quick review) to prepare students emotionally and mentally for learning and create a positive atmosphere.
Presentation: The teacher introduces the target structure or rule in context, provides examples, and helps students recognize the new language.
Practice: Students work on controlled exercises and activities that help them use the new language correctly and understand the rule.
Production: Students use the new language freely in speaking or writing by creating their own sentences or tasks.
Follow-up: Additional work or homework to reinforce the lesson.
ECRIF Framework
Encounter: Students hear or see new language and realize it is unfamiliar.
Clarify: Students learn the meaning, use, and form of the new language and ask questions to understand it clearly.
Remember & Internalize: Students practice the language in different contexts so it moves to long-term memory and connects with their past experiences.
Fluently Use: Students use the new language naturally and spontaneously in communication.
