What is gastroenteritis
Inflammation of stomach/small intestine often caused by infections
Symptoms of gastroenteritis
diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and dehydration
Pathophysiology: pathogen entry
ingestion of contaminated food/water
viruses: norovirus, rotavirus
bacteria: salmonella, E coli
parasites
Pathophysiology: gut lining disruption
Pathogens invade mucosa = immune response
viral infection damages villi = decreased surface area = malabsorption = diarrhea
Pathophysiology: bacterial damage
production of toxins = damage to epithelial cells = inflammation, cell death, fluid secretion
Pathophysiology: inflammatory response
cytokine release increases intestinal fluid secretion
= nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
Pathophysiology: fluid and electrolyte loss
excessive diarrhea/vomiting = dehydration and electrolyte imbalance = hypovolaemia, shock and organ failure
Treatment and management of gastroenteritis
rehydration, antibiotics/antivirals & antiemetics
