Q

The 3 levels of data gathering and processing are:

A
  1. Primary level: gathering data in the field (often done by volunteers)
  2. Secondary: Using other people’s data / databases
  3. Tertiary: application and use

Q

4 ways of Spatial gathering & presentation methodology

A
  1. Administrative border (different regions / gemeentes). Colored if present. Old method no longer used anymore
  2. Selected measuring site (spots where regular measurements are taken)
  3. UTM
  4. RD coordinates

Q

What is UTM?

A

Universal transverse Mercator:

a coordinate system that divides the world into sixty north-south zones, each 6 degrees of longitude wide. Terrible for small scale, useful for large scale. Corrects for presenting earths round surface on a flat surface

Q

What are RD coordinates?

A

Rijksdriehoekscoördinaten:

mostly used in NL. A network of about 5600 points in the Netherlands. Grind cells of 5x5 km

Q

Occupancy

A
  • Dots based on how many
  • Finer scale better for smaller area / smaller animal
  • By taking account the number of 1x1 cells within a 5x5 cell

Q

Spatial scale and rarity

A

% Squares occupied (see image)
- Fewer = bigger difference in rarity
- Geographical range (just NL vs all EU)
- Rabinowitz classes of rarity

Q

Mapping and monitoring

A

Are about space and time

Monitoring is on different sites tracking what happens over time

mapping is about understanding what exists
