The Uses of the Genitive Case
1) To translate ‘of’
2) To render the possessive
3) to form nouns after certain prepositions
4) after the numerals 2/3/4
5) after some words that indicate quantity
6) after the preposition ‘y’ to mean ‘in the possession of, to have’
7) the direct object of a negated verb (i.e NOT hungry, NOT tired)
8) To denote the absence of something after the word “нем’
What is the Ending for Masculine and Neuter Genitive Nouns?
For all endings except ‘й’ , ‘a’ is added to the ending.
For the ending ‘й’ , the ‘й’ is removed and replaced with ‘я’. The same occurs for ‘ь’.
What is the Ending for Feminine Genitive Nouns?
The ending ‘a’ is replaced by ‘ы’ where the spelling rule allows.
For ending effected by the spelling rulе, feminine nouns ending in ‘я’ and ‘ь’ the ending is replaced with ‘и’.
