A

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is an
internationally agreed upon

  1. set of procedures,
  2. types of equipment,
  3. communication protocols

used to increase safety and
make it easier to rescue
distressed ships, boats and aircrafts.

Subject to commercial vessels over 300 GT.

Area A1 is an area within coverage of at least one VHF coast station in which continuous DSC alerting is available, i.e. approx. 20-30 miles, or line-of-sight, from coasts.

  • VHF RADIO - DSC channel 70, +
    RT channels 16, 13 and 6.
  • 2 x SARTs if over 500 GT.
  • EPIRB (406 mHz)
  • PORTABLE VHFs for use in survival craft
    ( x 3 if > 500 GT.)
  • NAVTEX receiver (518 kHz)
  • Inmarsat EGC receiver, if the ship is engaged on voyages in Sea Area A3.
