402
47
Where to find High Rise Buildings?
403
48
When is a building considered a high rise?
If occupied floor is above 75 feet tall, equivalent to the height of a fire ladder.
49
When is a building considered a "super high rise"?
If over 420 feet tall.
50

56
Building Area:
-Exclusive of exterior walls -Exclusive of shaft areas and shaft walls -Inclusive of areas under building overhangs
57
Gross Area:
Measured from exterior face of walls
58
Building Height:
Measured to average height of the highest roof (i.e. mid-slope).
59
Grade Plane:
Reference plane representing average grade levels along the exterior edge of the building.
60
Basement:
Cannot be greater than 12' above grade plane at any point.
61
Mezzanine:
Intermediate floor level inserted between larger floor plates.
62
Type I (A+B)
-All noncombustible materials (masonry, concrete, steel) -Passive fire protection of all elements -Type A: 3 hr fire rating for structural system and bearing walls -Type B: 2hr fire rating for structural system and bearing walls
63
Type II (A+B)
-All noncombustible materials (masonry, concrete, steel) -Active or Passive fire protection of all elements -Type A: 1 hr fire rating for structural system and bearing walls -Type B: 0 hr fire rating for structural system and bearing walls
64
Type III (A+B)
Exterior walls are noncombustible materials, interior materials can be anything code approved.
65
Type IV (HT)
Exterior walls are noncombustible, structural frame is heavy timber construction, interior building elements are solid or laminated wood.
66
Type V
-Exterior walls, structural frame, and interior materials can be anything code approved. -Type A: 1 hr fire rating for structural system and bearing walls -Type B: 0 hr fire rating for structural system and bearing walls
67
What is a Fire Wall?
Produces complete fire separation between buildings and construction types. Required firewall resistance ratings vary by occupancy, but 3 hours is a good rule of thumb.
68
What is a Fire Barrier?
A less restrictive fire separation of usually 2 hours.
69
When is a Fire Barrier used?
-Separate different occupancies -Divide single occupancy into fire areas -Separate interior exit stairs from remainder of egress -Surround shaft enclosures
70
What is a Fire Partition?
The least restrictive type of fire separation, of generally 1 hr. Used primarily to separate dwelling units and corridors.
71
What is a Smoke barrier?
A continuous vertical or horizontal membrane, such as a wall, floor, ceiling assembly, that is designed to resist the passage of smoke. A 1 hr fire resistance is required.
72
What is a Smoke Partition?
Similar to a smoke barrier, but no fire resistance rating is required.
73
What is used to determine "Class" of material?
Flame Spread Index & Smoke-Developed Index
74
What is an Active system in fire protection?
Sprinklers used for fire protection
75
What is a Passive system in fire protection?
Materials with inherent fire protection used.
76
What is Egress?
Continuous and unobstructed path of exit travel from occupied space to public way.
77
What are the three elements of an egress system?

79
What is Occupant load?
Number of people allowed to occupy a space according by code.
80
What is Travel Distance?
Distance from the most remote point on a story along the unobstructed path of egress to the exit.
81
What is Common Path of Egress?
The portion of the exit access which occupants must travel before two separate and distinct paths of egress are available. The common path of egress may be equal to the travel distance, but it will never exceed the travel distance.
