Q

I have hard soil with a lot of clay content. How do I break it up?

A

Use Jonathan Green’s “Love Your Soil” product to break down compacted soil and release trapped nutrients. You can use this when you seed a patch or over seed as well, as well as in planting beds for flowers and vegetables.

Q

What is ‘overseeding’ and is it necessary

A
  • ## Use our Black Beauty Grass Seed or Blue Kentucky Grass SeedOverseeding = spreading new grass seed into an existing lawn (without removing turf) to thicken, fill thin spots, and improve variety.

Is it necessary?
Yes if lawn is thin, patchy, aging, or weed-prone.
(Optional if lawn is already dense and healthy.)

Typical in Chicagoland every 1–3 years to maintain thickness and crowd out weeds.

Q

How to manage lawn pH (or garden pH) ?

A

Ideal lawn/garden pH is 6.0–7.0 so grass can use nutrients well.

Mag-I-Cal: corrects soil pH (raise or lower by type); apply with a spreader.

Peat moss: lowers pH slowly; mix 1–2″ into top 2–4″ about 1 month before planting, then recheck.

What are the two grass seeds we offer?

A

Sun & Shade:
For mixed light, overseeding, and repair; quick to establish, durable, and adaptable.

Q

What is Love Your Soil?

A

Love Your Soil helps break down the native clay soil to make it easier for water, air, and nutrients to reach the grass and plant roots. It is important the soil be loose enough and strong enough so the grass can be nourished and held in place.
