5 stages of digestion
A
- Ingestion: taking in the food
- Digestion:
A. Mechanical digestion: physically breakdown of food into small particles
B. Chemical digestion: enzymes and hormones breaking down food into small particles - Absorption: nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream and delivered to tissues & organs throughout the body
- Compaction: water is reabsorbed in the large intestine to allow solid waste product to form into feces
- Defecation: feces is eliminated from the anus
