what do lipids consist of
carbon
hydrogen
oxygen ( much less than hydrogen )
difference between fat and oil
what are simple lipids?
made out of fatty acids with various alchohols
* fats - esters of fatty acids with glycerol
* waxes - esters of fatty acids with complex alchohol
what are compound lipids?
made out of lipid + non lipids
* Phospholipid = lipid + alchohol + phosphate
structure of glycerol
alchohol with 3 carbons, each bearing a hydroxyl (-OH) group
structure of fatty acids
details about saturated fatty acids
details about unsaturated fatty acids
what makes triglyceride
1 molecule of glycerol (alcohol) + 3 fatty acid molecules (carboxylic acid)
IT IS AN ESTER. HAHAHA
how is triglyceride formed
each hydroxyl (-OH) group in glycerol reacts with carboxyl (-COOH) group in fatty acid, in which the condensation reaction removes 1 molecule of water to form an ester bond.
functions of lipids
test for lipids
Ethanol emulsion test
present –> white emulsion formed when water was added
absent –> stayed clear when water was added
