What are the 2 types of lipids?
Phospholipids
Triglycerides
What forms a triglyceride?
Glycerol + 3 fatty acids.
Condensation reaction.
Ester bonds.
What forms a phospholipid?
Glycerol + 2 fatty acids + phosphate.
Ester bonds.
How are phospholipids polar?
Hydrophobic tail.
Hydrophillic head.
What are cis fatty acids?
They have H atoms on the same side of the double bond. Therefore easily metabolised.
What are trans fatty acids?
H atoms on opposite sides of the double bond. Therefore not metabolised.
Properties of triglycerides.
Low mass to energy ratio. (More energy in small volume)
Large, non polar, insoluble.
High ratio of H to O. (Release water when oxidised)
High ratio of energy storing bonds.
What are the 5 things lipids used for?
Cell membranes.
Water proofing.
Energy release.
Insulation.
Protection.
