What is cancer?
DNA mutation that causes uncontrolled cell division. Malignant tumour.
How do cell mutations cause uncontrolled cell division?
They alter the primary structure of proteins which prevents them from controlling cell division.
How does chemotherapy stop cell division?
It prevents DNA polymerase and DNA helicase. This prevents transcription of DNA so it cannot be replicated.
What is a mutation?
Change in the arrangement of bases in a gene or in the structure of a chromosome.
Arise spontaneously during DNA replication.
Cause base deletion, substitution. May result in a silent mutation.
Evolutionary protective measure.
Can also arise by chromosome non disfunction during meiosis.
What is a nonsense mutation?
When a mutation causes premature termination as a stop codon is coded for.
What is a mis-sense mutation?
When a different amino acid is produced
What is a silent mutation?
When the same amino acid is still produced.
What is chromosome non disjunction?
When chromosomes fail to separate during meiosis.
Results in a gamete with either one missing or one extra chromosome
What is a deletion mutation?
Base is deleted.
Leads to a frameshift
What is an addition or duplication mutation?
Base is added or multiplied.
Leads to a frameshift
What is an inversion mutation?
The genetic code is flipped.
What is a translocation mutation?
A whole section of DNA is transferred to another section
