Lymphatic system definition
A secondary circulatory system that is dead ending vessels and lymph nodes
Lymph formation
High blood pressure in the arteries cause fluid and small proteins to be forced out of blood plasma
This tissue fluid is called Extra cellular fluid (ECF)
ECF surrounds body cells
ECF is made continuously so it must be removed
The return of ECF
90% returns to capillaries
10% returns to lymph vessels
Liquid is now lymph (contains WBC , fats , proteins)
Lacteal
Transports fatty acids and glycerol to lymph vessels
Lymph vessels
Ensure that blood flows in one direction using valves
Vessels combine to form right lymphatic duct (located at right shoulder) and thoracic duct
Vessels contain lymph nodes
Thoracic and right lymphatic duct are the main vessels
Lymphatic system functions
To collect ECF and return it to blood
Fights again infections by filtration , stores lymphocytes and destroys micro organisms
Absorb and transport fats in digestive system , lymph found in lacteals
Lymph nodes
Fight infection
-filter bacteria and other harmful material from lymph
Mature and store a large no of lymphocytes
How does lymph move in the lymph vessels?
General body movements
Muscles in vessel walls
Lymph nodes
Swelling found along lymph vessels
Filter bacteria
Store lymphocytes (WBCS) some kill bacteria and others produce antibodies
