Mechanical ventilation Flashcards

(18 cards)

1
Q

What happens during normal inspiration

A

· Respiratory muscles contract
· Creates negative pressure in lungs
· Air flows into lungs (high to low pressure)
· Pressure gradient = interpulmonary pressure

Q

What happens during normal exhalation

A
  • Chest wall and lungs recoil
  • Positive pressure in lungs created
  • Air flows out the lungs down pressure gradient

Q

What does the ventilator do for expiration

A

gas flow is turned down but some air is still blown in which acts as PEEP

Q

What are the 4 ventilator modes

A
  1. Spontaneous Breathing
  2. Controlled Ventilation (CMV)

8
Q

What does the spontaneous breathing setting do?

A
  • provides some support
  • patient triggers breathing
  • pt controls rate and volume

13
Q

what is the risk of pressure controlled ventilation

A

The lung pressure can change but the volume of air being pushed in stays the same causing damage

14
Q

What’s the risk of volume controlled ventilation

A

If lung compliance decreases, not enough volume will be delivered causing hypoventilation

15
Q

What are the two breathe types for Mixed ventilation

16
Q

What’s supported Spontaneous breathing mode

A
  • pt breaths themselve with help
  • pt triggers vent
  • RR determined by pt
17
Q

What is pre-set on the vent for supported spontaneous breathing

A
  • oxygen
  • PEEP
  • Pressure Support
18
Q

How does a ventilator maintain PEEP

A

Vent blows some air during exhalation to prevent lung collapse
